Experience

Throughout my career I have been involved in all the phases of product development from design to documentation and maintenance.

Apr 2003-present: Clean Build Computing

Providing freelance software services, most recently for Pace Micro Technology (documenting and overseeing the development of their embedded C++ PDI APIs) and Safe Technology Ltd. (producing the Verity® in fe-safe manual). I have also contributed to several gaming books and magazines during this period.

Jul 1994-Apr 2003 Vicon Motion Systems

Oxford-based VMS is the world’s leading producer of systems for optical motion capture, with an annual turnover of several million pounds. During motion capture images are collected from multiple cameras and used to build a 3D computer model of the subject, which is then combined with data from other sources for a variety of purposes. Applications include gait analysis, animation, sports science and ergonomics.

The development department is one of the company’s most important assets, with a high level of programming expertise and several vision science PhDs.

1997-2003: Embedded Software Engineer (C++, VxWorks)
In charge of software development for the VxWorks-based Datastation, used by hundreds of hospitals, universities and animation studios worldwide. The Datastation forms the backbone of the Vicon system, communicating with cameras and other peripherals as well as the Windows-based post-processing software. This software was originally designed using OMT (I used UML for later revisions), and was written in embedded C++. As well as the main software I was responsible for designing many supporting data structures, including communications protocols, file formats and a driver definition language.

During this period I also co-authored the Vicon System Manual and acted as a "design troubleshooter", called in to bring a fresh perspective on tricky issues in other teams’ projects, a role developed as a result of colleagues’ respect for my insight.

1994-1997: Biomechanics Application Developer
Responsible for producing applications and utilities for Vicon's biomechanics customers, including gait analysts. The main product at this time was Vicon Reporter, a graph layout package for Windows written using MFC.

Jan 1986-Jul 1994: Oxford Digital Enterprises

ODE was a small independent software development house, producing games for various publishers including Domark and Activision. It eventually formed the core of Empire Interactive's in-house development team.

I was responsible for designing, programming and scripting games of many different types on half a dozen platforms using C and various assembly languages (Z80, 8086, 68000), including the best-selling version of Trivial Pursuit.
